TYCTTV: The Future Advocate Poetry and Storytelling Competition

Open to all children between the ages of 4 and 12 as part of Royal Canin’s “Take Your Cat to the Vet” initiative

Submission deadline is extended! Post your entries by 12 noon 24 November, 2020

Newman Drama collaborates with Royal Canin Malaysia to launch the TYCTTV: The Future Advocate Poetry & Storytelling Competition starting 19 October 2020. The competition that opens to all children between the ages of 4 and 12 is part of Royal Canin’s “Take Your Cat to the Vet” initiative that has been continuously organised annually since 2016.

“Newman Drama wants to encourage young children especially to build the confidence to face real-life scenarios such as group interactions, oral communications, interpersonal skills and many more. With the recent announcement of the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) that limits our physical classes, this competition couldn’t have launched at a better timing. We hope that children in Malaysia will take this opportunity to present and recite poetry, and share their stories about their favourite topic - their beloved cats!” said Siew Yong, Founder and Director, Newman Drama. “While we offer physical classes in the Klang Valley and Penang, now with the online competition, we can reach out to more children across the nation”.

The collaboration was signed to encourage more children to sharpen and showcase their talent in creative communications and public speaking. “Other than providing this platform for our future generation to express themselves and share their own insights, Royal Canin hopes to educate them about the importance of veterinary care for cats. We know that children love cats for the cute and playful nature, but we also need to teach them the proper steps to caring for our furry little friends - the type of food the cats need to maintain their overall health and shiny coat, the regular check-ups, the grooming and other aspects of pet care. With the collaboration with Newman Drama School, children can begin to cultivate the values of animal welfare from a very young age,” said Dr. Melissa Phoon, Corporate Affairs Manager, Royal Canin Malaysia.

The online competition is divided into two categories, poetry recital for children between the ages of 4 and 7 years old and the storytelling for those between the ages of 8 and 12 years old. Interested participants can send in a 3-minute video talking about taking their cats to the vet to qualify for the competition after playing an educational web game on cat care via link: www.animalhappiness.asia/mycat2vet

Once the video is ready for upload on the Newman Drama’s Facebook Event Page, the participants must tag @royalcaninMY and include the hashtags: #cat2vet, #tycttv #newmandrama for the judges to review.

“Newman Drama and Royal Canin will contribute up to 70% of the total evaluation, so the children are required to include their stories or experience taking their cats to the vet for extra marks.

Meanwhile, likes and shares on Social Media platforms will contribute to the remaining 30%,” Siew Yong added. “In conclusion, we’d like the children to share their sweet memories with their cats, hoping that they will continue to value their pets as part of their family members through this Social Media competition”.

The competition will run until 18th November 2020. Each child is entitled for one entry. Cash prizes, certificates and medals worth more than RM1,200 are up for grabs!

About Newman Drama:

Newman Drama was officially started in 2014.

This humble company was created by the chirpy lady Siew Yong. After years of providing drama classes in the Klang Valley, she was more convinced that teaching drama is really what she is passionate and good at (apart from performing, of course). Thus together with John Newman they have created a brand for her drama classes – Newman Drama.

The objective of Newman Drama is simple. Newman Drama uses Drama Tools to enrich the learning and teaching experience for both Malaysian students and teachers.

Newman premise their core value on holistic learning and teaching for students and teachers. They believe students and teachers are equally their great assets. Newman Drama’s vision is to provide a platform not just for students to excel but also for teachers to expand their teaching horizon. Thus, Newman Drama is also an ideal fusion platform for performing artists and professionals from different background (coming together) to pass on their ‘craft’ to the next generation.

Newman Drama currently offers classes in KL, Klang Valley and Penang. They have classes in learning centres, kindergarten, local, private and international schools.

Diving into the science of swimming the fun way

SwimIn12's fun science-centred programme enables kids and teens to master swimming techniques

Did you know Sir Isaac Newton's Law of Motion that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction is applicable to when you're in water? While in the water, swimmers must stroke downward to keep moving and stay afloat – opposing equal force that the water expends to swimmers to keep them from moving.

There is no escaping science. It can be always used to explain everything in everyday life. Similarly, there is much science to learn in the art of swimming.

"It is an added benefit when students understand and apply what they know about the science when they swim. For example, in asking them to keep their hands straight, we demonstrate how this is similar to the shape of a ship, plane or rocket that helps to cut through air or water faster.

"When we talk about more air in the lungs will help them float while less air will sink, we apply this to the ballast tank in submarines. We have heard success stories from our Swim Science students from as far as Australia, Singapore and India," said E.J. Yeap who is Founder and Chief Executive Officer of SwimIn12.

The 11-year old institution kicked off the beta testing of Swim Science in March this year, just 10-days after the enforcement of Malaysia's Movement Control Order (MCO) following the worsening of the COVID-19 outbreak.

"The order meant that pools would be closed for three months and we thought of ways to keep an interest in swimming, especially for our younger students.

"Led by our coaching team leader Darshini Balakrishnan, we are proud to say we innovated a new style of teaching by incorporating the evergreen laws of science. It helps beginners understand the concept of swimming faster by simplifying the important theory of water physics in an engaging manner.

"The programme also explains how swimming theories apply in many aspects of aerodynamic and marine sciences. With the help of today's technology, we make Swim Science sessions interactive and interesting for students to follow," Yeap explained.

Catered to those aged between seven and 18, SwimIn12 hires the help of video communications programme Zoom to conduct lessons.

"We admit that it is not easy to win the crowd when we mention online sessions. However, with Swim Science it's not a one-way direction. It is more than just listening and watching. We keep it interesting with some activities like quiz sessions and even treasure hunts for things around the house that are relevant to the lesson.

"I'd commend my team of 30-odd coaches at SwimIn12 for innovating this programme, teaching and educating students and keeping the lessons interesting for our students," he adds.

Swim Science is offered in two packages – eight lessons (RM200) or 20 lessons (RM300) in a month. Yeap takes pride in saying that the programme is a purely Malaysian innovation, observing a similar approach taken a few months later, by a neighbouring country.

Lessons Learned in Play

Allowing little ones to have fun is so important to their educational development. It not only enhances their own skills, but it can also foster a love for learning; thus, during the younger years, it's important to not only spend time working on understanding the alphabet and numerals, but also some of the classic childhood activities. Doing both can benefit your child's vpk tampa experience. Here are three activities that can boost your mental growth.

Puzzles

There are many benefits in putting together a puzzle, especially for kids. Their eyes are still developing, learning to recognize shapes and forms. These fun boxes of pieces encourage them to pay attention to details, learning the differences and nuances of images. That's useful in reading and math as kids must start to recognize the structure of letters and numbers. In addition, activities such as these demand patience and critical thinking.

Coloring and Cutting

It's okay to explore a huge box of crafts. The imagination goes wild, and kids begin to explore their own minds. In addition, having to handle the small pieces allows them to work on their fine motor skills. Holding a crayon and drawing fun characters is simply an extension of an early writing lesson. Holding a pencil really is an important skill. Those that learn the wrong way may place too much pressure, building frustration with writing assignments down the road.

Music

The auditory system continues to grow even during these years. It's adapting to hearing small differences. In fact, even some letters are hard to hear until someone is older. Songs, though, work with introducing higher-level skills, making it simpler to remember and comprehend. The kiddos become more familiar with rhyme, increase vocabulary and become familiar with a study technique. They may not realize it, but by you playing ABC songs in the car, you're actually increasing their focus on knowledge and making it seem interesting.
If you need a few things to do at home, don't think flashcards are the only option. While useful, some of those entertaining tasks are just as useful.

Spritzer celebrates 30 years, reinforces environmental stewardship

Good evening to dear readers and visitors. It's Friday and I had a well spend morning with Spritzer at Sunway Pyramid.

Spritzer Berhad (Spritzer), Malaysia’s leading producer of bottled natural mineral water, turns 30 this year and the company is celebrating its anniversary with a roadshow that aims to reinforce its commitment
toward environmental stewardship.

Dr  Chuah Chaw Teo, Director of R&D, Spritzer, provided the opening speech
Speaking at the official launch of the roadshow titled “30 years of Natural Goodness” held at the Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall, Dr. Chuah Chaw Teo, Spritzer’s director of R&D, said that
environmental preservation has been at the core of the company’s operations from its
earliest history.

“From the very beginning of our operations, we viewed environmental pollution with great concern because we understood how it can affect the quality of water, as well as damage the already limited sources of water in the country,” said Chuah.“

It is with this concern that Spritzer took the initiative to invest in a vast land bank measuring 330 acres, approximately the size of 266 football fields, surrounded by a pristine tropical rainforest, located far away from all pollution and creating a safe zone around our water source, hence protecting the integrity, quality, safety and purity of its natural mineral water,” he said, elaborating that the company’s natural mineral water is untouched by human hands, from source to bottle.

(From left) Vincent Chin Wah Fei (Digital Marketing Manager), Kris Cheng Teng Huei (Digital Marketing Executive), Jasmine Liew Su Yin (Senior Brand Executive), Fynn Low Bee Huan(Brand Manager), Priscilla Lim Ching Hoon (Marketing Manager), Dr. Chuah Chaw Teo(R&D Director), Elaine Ho Yee Ling (Group Marketing Manager), Lyana Shamimie (Brand Executive), Macee Lee Mein Ching (Brand Manager), Mohammad Hatta (Brand Manager), Goh Chin Siu (Asst. Digital Marketing Manager) and Mohamad Faiz Izhan Bin Mohd (E-Comm Support Executive)
“Then, as part of our corporate social responsibility and to create awareness among the public on
the importance of embracing sustainability as a lifestyle, we erected a Spritzer EcoPark in the
midst of this facility, where visitors are welcomed to relax and unwind in quiet, surrounded by
natural flora and fauna in their original environment, undisturbed by humans,” Chuah said.
Spritzer EcoPark was opened to the public in July 2015.

The park features various recreational, educational and tourism - related activities and attractions includes jungle trekking, bird -watching, golfing at an 18- hole mini golf course, a visitor gallery, guided tours of the company’s water bottling process and more.

“Our efforts didn’t stop there and we continuously carry - out initiatives at the park to strengthen the ecosystems there, as well as create greater awareness towards the need to protect and preserve our environment,” Chuah said and added that the company had recently planted over 16,000 trees at the park to enhance its biodiversity.

Grand Prize Winner of the Eco Art Competition Ang Li Qin received her prize from Dr Chuah.
Chuah also stated that Spritzer’s environmental efforts goes beyond protecting the company-owned
water sources and supply. “We also strive to ensure that our efforts are not limited to just conserving
and protecting the environment, but also to achieve a more sustainable practice by intertwining
some of these into our own product life- cycle,” he said.

As an example, Chuah pointed to the company’s mineral water bottles that comes with a special ‘twist and turn’ feature, making the container collapsible which would save up to 57% of space in a recycling bin.

“We are also introducing A CILIS, a new silica -rich natural mineral water from Spritzer that comes in plant -based bottles that are non-toxic and compostable ̶ a first in Malaysia,” he said.

“The introduction of A CILIS is another significant effort that aims to offer customers who are environmentally-conscious with high - quality, great tasting natural mineral water that uses alternatives to the regular mineral bottles found on shelves,” Chuah said.
At the roadshow you can see winners of Eco Art Competition
“These plant- based bottles are eco-friendly as 30% of the plastic material used to make them come
from the fibre and other discarded, unused parts of the sugar cane or corn ,” he explained.

“More over, manufacturing these bottles produces less CO2 emissions, while the bottles are 100%
recyclable,” he elaborated.

“As for ensuring environmental sustainability of our operations, I’m proud to announce that we are investing in a fully- automated warehouse that is equipped with green building features, and is expected to commence operations early next year,” he revealed.

“This warehouse, also being built at our current site in Taiping, costs over RM45 million, and will feature state-of-the-art equipment, smart connected systems and leverages on IoT to drive greater efficiency in our
operations,” he said.

Spritzer’s 30 Years Anniversary roadshow is held at Sunway Pyramid from August 22 -25, and is open to the public.

This is one of the fun activities, Grow Green. DIY plant is fun as on the spot hands on learning and bringing home the plant.

Visitors to the roadshow can learn more about the company’s efforts toward greater sustainability and take part in the various programs and activities prepared such as potting plants with Spritzer’s mineral water, photo booth, tea mixology, cooking demonstration and more.

I am glad that I took time off for this event, I like the Grow Green that we can DIY our own plant using the Spritzer bottle. If you like to see more photos of the event can click on the link, it will be fun and interesting for the kids to learn too.  If you don't have plan for this weekend, can consider going this roadshow.

While the internet has brought about unprecedented levels of convenience and ease to our lifestyles, it has also led to the rise of internet addiction amongst Malaysians. In fact, last year, the Ministry of Health reported that internet addiction has reached alarming rates with 34.9% of teenagers between the ages of 13 and 17 found to be addicted to the Internet. 11street (www.11street.my), one of the leading online marketplaces in Malaysia, is providing a solution to this issue by joining forces with Audra, a unique internet security solution that allows you to set your own rules for your internet usage in your homes and offices. This partnership between Audra and 11street, places Malaysia as the first country in Southeast Asia to make Audra available to the public. I am sure it's a good news for parents and employers as now they know where they can balance the life of their lifestyle and working environment.

The Audra internet security solution provides users with complete control to strike a balance between the usage of technology and personal well-being, while creating a sense of digital wellness. Audra combines a cloud-based service and a gateway device, that sits between a modem and a router, acting as as an additional layer of control and protection to regulate the users’ internet usage. With Audra, users can select settings based on the preferences and needs of their environment, including restricting content and websites, setting time limits on browsing and defending networks from phishing, viruses as well as other attacks on the system.

Mr Mahbubul Matin, Chairman of Dotlines Sdn. Bhd. said, “As we continue to move towards a digitalised nation, there is an urgent need for a safe and user-friendly cyber security feature to ensure the protection of users of all ages. Many of our activities such as banking and shopping are done via the internet, which means not only are we susceptible to online threats, but also decreased productivity in our daily lives.

“Our goal is to help families and businesses alike strike a balance in their daily tech usage to allow Malaysians to establish healthy guidelines for their online activities. We envision a world where we can all experience digital wellness in our everyday living. This collaboration with 11street is the perfect avenue for us to provide Malaysians with complete control over internet usage and protection from online threats.”

Henry Ho, General Manager of Business Development and Partnership of 11street further added, “11street is excited to partner with Audra to become the first country in Southeast Asia to make this tool available on an online marketplace. We care about our consumers and their well-being;
hence it is our role to offer them a real solution—a product that will promote a healthier digital lifestyle in the long run.

“We believe that amidst the digital revolution, it is important to maintain human connections and find a balance between the tech and non-tech aspects of our lives. Adding a product like Audra to 11street is a major step towards creating a safe, secure and healthy online environment for Malaysians, which is a crucial need for both families and businesses. On top of that, Audra is so easy to use that anyone can operate it!”

Via this partnership with 11street, Audra will be making two variants available to Malaysians on the online marketplace: Audra Home and Audra Business.

Audra Home is a simple plug-and-play setup system with an inbuilt router that optimises parental controls and provides robust internet security to give families the flexibility to set the right balance in the growth and safety of their children. Many people have Internet access now but didn't know to control their usage. This is good as you can know limit the usage of Internet access and the websites they access. Audra Business, on the other hand, gives business owners the ability to set the rules for better staff productivity with real-time control of the office wireless networks with the Audra Management App. Audra Business is a gateway device that is attached to an existing wifi router. It also has the ability to whitelist websites while blocking incoming malware and adware. Businesses can now stay protected against any form of data leaks and digital threats with the Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack prevention. Audra operates on an easy graphical user interface (GUI) that is both parent-friendly and admin-friendly.

If you like to know where you can purchase, sharing is caring now purchase Audra in Malaysia via 11street in just a few clicks. Head on over to the Audra Official Store on 11street to purchase a yearly subscription of the Audra Home package, which can be utilised by up to 20 users at a time, at RM699 or the Audra Business package, which retails at RM999 and can accommodate up to 100 concurrent users. Specially for purchases made in 2018 via 11street, customers purchasing the Audra internet security solution for the first three months will also be entitled to have their second year of subscription fee waived. LEGOLAND® BRINGS JOY TO THE KIDS IN HOSPITAL SULTAN ISMAIL JOHOR

The LEGOLAND® Malaysia Resort Police costume character joining the kids in the ward in a sing and dance activity.
LEGOLAND® Malaysia Resort and LEGO® Malaysia teamed up to bring its awesome brand of fun and play to children in the pediatric ward in Hospital Sultan Ismail, Johor. The kids of the palliative care unit at the pediatric ward – a special unit for kids suffering from serious illnesses – were treated to awesome, fun-filled LEGO® activities that were meant to stimulate their imaginations through play. These kids, who are not allowed to go home during the holiday seasons, received the ultimate holiday treat, as they were treated to building and colouring activities, singing and dancing performances and a special appearance by LEGO® Police costume character.

Starting the visit with the LEGO® building activity, the children were challenged to a speed building activity where they were all given a LEGO® Christmas Set. The first five kids whom completed the activity won LEGO® sets and LEGOLAND® Malaysia Resort merchandise. Following the building activity, the children got to express their imagination through the colouring activity. Aside from the building and colouring activities, the children had fun decorating their very own jelly based on their creativity using healthy fruits. Both LEGOLAND® Malaysia Resort and LEGO® Malaysia worked hand-in-hand to sponsor various LEGO® sets and LEGOLAND® Malaysia Resort merchandise for the kids’ play area for them to continue building their imagination. The day was ended with various goodies, sponsored by LEGO® Malaysia and LEGOLAND® Malaysia Resort, were handed to all the children to enjoy.

Casper Bonavent, Director of Operations, LEGOLAND® Malaysia Resort (left) sharing a light moment with a young boy in the ward while gifting him a LEGO® gift set.
“At LEGOLAND® Malaysia Resort, we believe deeply that every kid deserves the right to play, and grow through play. This holiday season we wanted the children to have a great time and fully explore their imaginations through play even though they are unable to spend the holidays at home. We wanted them to forget their illness and just be kids once again, with no worries about treatment and pain. We felt compelled to bring the fun to them,” said Young Pil-Kim, General Manager (Interim) at LEGOLAND® Malaysia Resort.

“We’re proud to have done this with like-minded partners in LEGO® Malaysia. Some say there is kind of a healing quality in laughter. Beyond the smiles and laughter that the kids experienced here today, it is our sincere hope that the awesome fun and games today brings them closer to their family and their imaginations. They could not visit us in LEGOLAND® Malaysia Resort so we brought LEGOLAND® Malaysia Resort to them. It is after all the Merlin Magic Wand’s spirit,” Young concluded.
