Experts advise middle aged adults to care for musculoskeletal health early to support better quality of life later

By 2040, Malaysians aged 60 years and above is expected to doublei from the current estimate of 10.3% of the populationii! Recognising the importance for Malaysia’s aging population to maintain their musculoskeletal health, which can affect their mobility, flexibility, balance and thereby quality of life as they age, Fonterra Brands Malaysia through its adult nutrition brand Anlene™ introduces ACTIFIT 3X™ and GOLD 5X™, formulated to provide important nutrients for Malaysian adults. 

 

The Social Wellbeing Research Centre at Universiti Malaya projected the number of Malaysians aged 60 years and above to reach 6.3 million in 2040, which is about 2 out of every 10 Malaysiansi. The musculoskeletal system provides form, support, stability, and movement to the body. It is made up of the bones of the skeleton, muscles, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, joints, and other connective tissue that supports and binds tissues and organs together.

“It is easy for middle aged adults in their 40s to not notice their own musculoskeletal health when they don’t have any condition, such as pain resulting from injury or bad posture. Being able to walk requires strength, flexibility and balance. Simple tasks like eating and dressing needs dexterity of the hands and wrists. Being able to reach up, bend over and squat down, allows people to carry out everyday activities like gardening, cooking and cleaning. Any individual would like to continue to be able to do all these without any support and assistance, especially when they progress into their 60’s and beyond,” she says. 

 

Another expert in the musculoskeletal field is chiropractor, Mr. Calvin Shun, Founder of Osso Bone Care Chiropractic, who highlights changes in the musculoskeletal system as one ages. “Our bones may start to deteriorate from as early as 30siv , losing up to 20% of bone densityv and our joint cartilages (the ‘cushions’ between joints) may have significant degeneration in our 40svi. Our muscle functions may become weaker by losing up to 29% of its strengthvii as we age,” he says.

“Musculoskeletal conditions, such as osteoarthritis which usually occurs in our knees can interfere with people’s ability to carry out their daily normal activities. Common symptoms include pain, stiffness and reduction of flexibility. That will reduce level of mobility, and in the long run may rob people of their independence and impairing their ability to participate in family, social and working life, and thus their quality of life could be affected,” he continues.

Shun says degeneration of bone mass, muscles or joint cartilage may accelerate with aging, but there are several common steps one could take to slow it down. He advises middle aged adults to maintain a healthy weight; exercise regularly, especially work outs that build muscles and maintain strong bones; take care of small injuries and do not allow them to develop into bigger issues that affect movements; and always remember to sit and walk with the right postures!

Launch of Guardian's Bring Your Orange Bag 2

 Guardian Health and Beauty (Guardian) introduced its BYOB2 (Bring Your Orange Bag) orange bag exclusively for its customers in conjunction with Environment Day 2016. Designed by Marie Sydonie, a former French catwalk model and more recently of Sydonie Apparel fame, the re-usable orange will be available at all Guardian stores from 29 October to 31 December 2016.

"The orange bags were produced from funds collected from the 'No Plastic Bag Day' campaign. This year there are a total of 25,000 bags up for grabs by environmental-loving Guardian shoppers. Guardian's first launched its BYOB last year in Melaka with a series of three specially-designed reusable bags.  Shoppers at Guardian stores nationwide are entitled to one orange bag free-of-charge with purchases of RM120 and above in a single receipt for CIMB Cardholders only. For Non-CIMB card holders, the bag is free with purchases of RM180 and above in a single receipt.
